Third Grade
Newsletter
For the week of October 29-November 2
Please VOTE on Tuesday! No School!
Next week, beginning on Wednesday, Nov. 7th and running
through Friday, Nov. 9th, Highland will be
raising money for the children of Africa . As
the 2nd grade classes have learned about Africa ,
they learned that a child dies from hunger there every 15 seconds, and they
have been inspired to help! Please send your coins or dollars for donation with
your student, or feel free to bring it yourself. We will be collecting it in a
giant bank outside the music room. Thank you so much for your support and
generosity!

Eicher
Reading: We will continue to
focus on main idea with a test on Thursday. Study Island
is a great way to study for this test. We will also continue to read The Courage
of Sarah Noble. Please look for reading assignments over this book. We will
not have spelling words next week due to Pioneer Day on Monday and being out on
Election Day.
Eicher Math: In math we will be
focusing on times 2's and 3's. We also be looking at different multiplication
strategies. Please check for homework each night.
Bishop Reading: We are still learning how to identify the main idea of a
passage or paragraph. We are now reading the chapter book Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing. In writing, we are finishing up a quick writing piece about
monsters. We will continue to work on
our opinion piece about Disney villains. The new spelling words are: handle, trouble, simple, people, middle,
table, little, gentle, poodle, pickle, noodle, saddle, juggle, uncle, riddle,
example, throttle, obstacle, miracle, muscle. In grammar, we will be
learning about singular (1) and plural (2 or more) nouns. Example: boy-boys,
bench-benches, berry-berries No tests next week because of pioneer activities
on Monday and Election Day on Tuesday.
Bishop
Math: Each day in class we will work on: telling time, counting money,
problem solving, subtraction with regrouping, and multiplication. Please
continue to memorize the multiplication facts. Some students are already on
their 3’s. You must study these at home!
Please look for a small amount of math homework each night. Also look for graded papers in the Friday
folder. My tests are cumulative so any old tests are a great source to use when
reviewing for a test. Our next test will be on November 8th.

Math: We will start Chapter 3 next week over multiplication. We
will learn how addition is related to multiplication and how to multiply with
the factors 0 and 1. Vocabulary words are:
array - a set of objects in row and columns
equal groups - groups that have the same number of objects
factor - a number that is multiplied by another number to find a
product
multiply - When you
multiply, you combine equal groups to find how many in all.
product - the answer in a multiplication problem
Please go over these words with your child. Also Study Island is a great way to practice skills
that have been taught or that we are working on. Your child will know how
to log on the web site.
We will also start 3x's multiplication.
Cash
Math: We will
continue learning multiplication strategies next week. Along with
memorizing facts, the students need to be able to draw diagrams to solve
multiplication problems. These include models and arrays. We will be
working on 3's and 4's next week. Please help your child memorize these
facts at home.
